Today, we announce that Tides Canada has changed its name to MakeWay. A quiet leader in environmental and social justice philanthropy in Canada for the last 20 years, the new MakeWay name reflects the momentum of change that this organization stands for.

"No organization takes on a name-change lightly. But it was clear the time had come to be defined by ourselves not others." -- Joanna Kerr, CEO, MakeWay.

"In these tragic and hopeful times, MakeWay's purpose is ever clear. The gaping inequities laid bare by the virus and the anti-racism protests crystallize how much justice matters. New leadership is rising, and the dramatic changes needed to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss seem more possible. More of us are seeing our interconnectedness. The time has come to make this transformative shift. The necessity of making way for nature and communities to thrive together is of even greater relevance and worth right now" says MakeWay CEO, Joanna Kerr.

20 years ago, a group of philanthropists and changemakers asked: How can we foster a healthy planet and a just Canadian society? Inspired by the model of the US-based Tides Foundation they named this organization Tides Canada. We love what we have achieved in that name.

We contributed to the historic Great Bear Rainforest agreements in BC. We trailblazed the shared platform model in Canada that now hosts 60 community-led initiatives. We became one of the most significant philanthropic players in the North. With Metis and First Nations communities across Northern Manitoba we have built collaborative solutions for food security and well-being. And, last year we launched Canada's first 100% customizable impact-invested donor-advised fund.

Yet we hold no legal, governance, or financial connection with Tides US. It is time for us to resolve confusion between the two and to tell our story more clearly than ever before.

Going forward as MakeWay, we are clear about our mission: We build partnerships and solutions to help nature and communities thrive together.

In this new chapter, MakeWay will expand the integration of our work, bringing all of our in-house solutions together to achieve more impact in key geographies and issue areas.

We look forward to partnering with you in this next chapter. Let's MakeWay for what's possible, together. Join us.

    About MakeWay

    SOURCE:  MakeWay: Our Story, 2020-06-04

In 2000, a small group of changemakers and philanthropists asked: how can we foster a healthy planet and a just Canadian society?

Inspired by the model of the US-based Tides Foundation they set up Tides Canada to provide tools to support philanthropy, and created a unique shared platform that powers social change initiatives across the country.

Our journey started out in BC's Great Bear Rainforest, by supporting historic First Nations-led conservation agreements. Since then, we have achieved a regional presence in Manitoba, Northern Canada, Western Canada, and Ontario, with programs, funder collaboratives, over 60 community-led projects in-house, and host to 150 donor-advised funds all environmentally and socially invested.

Today we are MakeWay. With a robust swiss army knife of expertise, we offer many different things to our partners: Our shared platform. Our donor-advised funds. Our collaboratives. Our dedication to work simultaneously for social equity, economic prosperity, and a healthy environment.

Throughout our partnerships with community leaders, philanthropists, foundations, and governments we have provided momentum and helped amplify impact.

Two decades on, it is clear that our purpose is to build partnerships and solutions that help nature and communities thrive together.

    Welcome to MakeWay.
